Fifty years ago this morning was one of the best Christmass ever. While visiting our grand[parents in Ypsilanti, Michigan the house caught fire on Christmas Eve. Grant and I were rushed outside and Mom following behind with Jeanne tripped and fell in the deep snow. The volunteer fire department arrived and quickly went to work on the flames with the supervisory assistance of a drunk neighbor. Dad and my Grandpa and uncles brought out the presents and any furniture they could, while us children watched in horror from another neighbors car. Eventually the fire was extinguished but heavily damage the garage. The brick wall that separated the garage from the house saved the house. We were able to return and after having a weary night we opened our presents on a wonderful Christmas morning.
