Fifty years ago today I was a freshman in HS, out wandering the hallways when I should have been in a study hall. I first heard the news from a fellow student, but I didnt believe it. What an idiot, I thought, does he think were living in Africa? South American? or some other place where theyre always bumping off their leaders? Sheesh. This is AMERICA, for heavens sake. Shortly thereafter the news was announced over the school intercoms, and I knew that even though this was AMERICA, for heavens sake, this was indeed a place where our leaders were bumped off, seemingly on a regular basis. A sobering, reality-check, day and, like everybody else who was alive at the time, I will never forget it.
