Fifty years ago today The Searchers hit No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 with Love Potion No. 9. Two weeks later the song peaked at No. 3, where it stayed for two weeks. The Searchers were a British Invasion band who had had a hit with Needles and Pins in 1964. This song, written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, was originally a modest hit for The Clovers, who took it to No. 23 in 1959. The Searchers version was actually off of their first album, recorded in 1963. It was never released as a single in the U.K. Leiber and Stoller, of course, penned tons of hits, including Hound Dog, Poison Ivy, and Charlie Brown. The musical revue based on their songs, Smokey Joes Cafe, ran on Broadway from 1995 to 2000, a record for a musical revue. This one is a very catchy and memorably funny tune in a minor key. https://youtube/watch?v=7rXhXLsNJL8
