This was announced by the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov after his meeting with his Fijian counterpart, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, in Moscow last Friday. “We agreed to prepare a memorandum on cooperation between the foreign ministries of the Russian Federation and Fiji, in which we will set out topics and mechanisms of regular consultations,” Mr Lavrov said. He said he was satisfied with the results of their negotiations, which confirmed their mutual interest in the reinforcement of mutually beneficial ties. “I am convinced that bilateral cooperation does not correspond only to the interests of Russia and Fiji, but contributes to stability, security and development in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean.” He said they discussed the state of bilateral relations and the 40th anniversary which they are celebrating this year saying their ties had a deeper history. According to Mr Lavrov, at the beginning of the 19th century Mikhail Lazarev and Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen visited Ono Island, one of Fiji’s islands. “Warm and friendly ties between our people had been established based on their diaries.” Mr Lavrov and Ratu Inoke revised the course of the agreements reached during the official visit of Fiji’s Prime Minister, Rear Admiral (Retired) Voreqe Bainimarama, to Russia in June last year. “That time, it was about the set-up of practical cooperation in a range of areas. “It was stated that in the past they managed to reinforce the contractual legal framework and advance in the formation of conditions for the extension of trade, investment and humanitarian cooperation.
