Fiji gears up for U20’s The Vodafone Fiji Under -20 side is wrapping up their preparations as they gear up to face the American Samoa side this Friday in the opening match of the 2014 Oceania Football Confederation U20 championship. Numerous months of preparation backed with a solid tour of New Zealand has prepared the national side which aims to become the first Fiji side to qualify for a FIFA World Cup event. The OFC U20 championship will be held from May 23-31 at the ANZ Stadium in Suva. Ravinesh Kumar coached U20 side shifted camp to the Fiji Football Association headquarters in Vatuwaqa last week. “We are just doing our final touches in the next few days as we prepare for the U20 championship. The tour to New Zealand was a very positive one for the side and the side has gained a lot from this,” Kumar said. “I do not want to talk about winning or losing at the moment but we will take each game as it comes and then see what needs to be done. We have been preparing well and hopefully we can the job done.” Fiji, New Caledonia, American Samoa, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands will be part of the U20 championship this year. New Zealand being the host of the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup is not part of the event and this has earned them an automatic entry. Kumar believes the playoffs will not be a work in the park. “Every team is coming prepared for the championship and we cannot afford to underestimate any side. We are out to make the country proud and we hope that the general public supports us.” The Vodafone Fiji U20 side is training at the National Football Academy pitch and also at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
