File Under: Reason #721,479 My Job is Amazing! I was very cranky to wake up at 6am on a Sunday morning to be in St. Paul for a 7:30am training. And nothing seemed to go right. Nothing to wear. Dense fog to slow my progress. Coffee brewed too slowly. All the things. I arrived at the National Guard building flustered (but not late!) not knowing what to expect. I figured that there would be about 20 people there at the Minnesota National Guards first ever LGBTQ 101/Pride training. I expected a very hard training with grumbling and forced participation. I had one hour to talk about being LGBTQ in the military. I was met by a crew of officers with impressive titles who all expressed their happiness that I was there. Feeling like I had stumbled into a parallel universe, I entered a room of 120 service members! After an hour of training with great questions and full participation, I left the room armed with a certificate of appreciation, at least two new volunteers, and a request for help from a teacher who now wants to talk about LGBTQ issues in his high school classroom. As I was walking outside, a woman stopped me and said I never thought I would see this day that someone like you would be here. I got really nervous that this was not going to go well! She then said Thank you. You coming here will make it easier for me. Ill see you at Pride with my wife! Wow. Change does happen. And, once again, I reminded that Im so grateful and blessed to do work that I love.
