Filipino-American Writers in Conversation in UST The UST Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies (UST CCWLS), in cooperation with the UST Varsitarian, will be holding a conversation with five Filipino-American writers on July 23, 2014, 3:00-5:00 PM, at the Tanghalang Teresita Quirino, G/F Benavides Bldg., University of Santo Tomas, España St., Sampaloc, Manila. The writers who will be reading from their published works or works-in-progress are Amalia Bueno, Fidelito Cortes, M. Evelina Galang, and Lara Stapleton. R. Zamora Linmark will serve as facilitator Bueno has just completed her first book, a collection of poetry titled “Gabriela’s Daughters.” Cortes was a Stegner Fellow in Poetry at Stanford University and has written two poetry collections, “Waiting for the Exterminator” (Kalikasan Press), which won the National Book Award from the Manila Critics’ Circle, and “Everyday Things” (UST Publishing House), a finalist for the 2010 National Book Award. Galang teaches in and directs the Creative Writing Program at the University of Miami, and is the author of “Her Wild American Self” (Coffee House Press, 1996), “One Tribe” (New Issues Press), and “Angel de la Luna and the 5th Glorious Mystery” (Coffee House Press, 2013). Stapleton has won the Hopwood Award for Fiction, the Columbia Journal Award, and a Ludwig Vogelstein Grant; and is the author of the Lowest Blue Flame Before Nothing (Aunt Lute, 1999), a Pen Open Book Committee Selection and an Independent Booksellers’ Selection. Linmark has twice received writing grants from the Fulbright Foundation, and has authored five books and two plays. His forthcoming works include “Pop Verite,” a poetry collection, to be published by Hanging Loose Press in 2015. After the conversation, the latest issue of Tomás, the official literary journal of the UST CCWLS, will be launched. Volume 2, Issue Number 3 editor is Ralph Semino Galán, UST CCWLS Senior Resident Fellow and de facto Deputy Director, with UST Resident Fellow Chuckberry Pascual serving as managing editor. Tomás Editor-in-Chief is UST CCWLS Director Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo. The event is open to creative writers, literary enthusiasts and the general public.
