Film 2: Calvary Irish This Irish film (made in 2014), is the follow up feature of writer-director John Michael McDonagh whose previous features include The Guard. It has a great ensemble cast including Brendan Gleeson (The Guard, In Bruges, Harry Potter etc.), Chris ODowd (Bridesmaids and the IT Crowd), and Dylan Moran (Black Books). This film was one of the more thought provoking of the festival. The focus, so topical currently, is of what is to be done with those of the clergy who have abused children throughout the 20th century. Topical world-wide, and clearly within its Irish context. With this in mind, the premise lies in that of an abuse-victim to punish a good priest, one innocent of no crimes, who is esteemed within his parish. This is established in the first scene through confession, with Father Lavell never seeing the face of his potential assassin. He is given the week to get his house in order before aforementioned killing is to take place. This film created for me a great empathy for those religious leaders in small communities who are tarnished with the same brush as their abusive peers. Calvary does not try to resolve how such terrible matters should be resolved; it did however awaken a sympathy in me for those innocents trying quietly to do good in communities who just happen to be religious leaders. This is an excellent film. Dark, slightly comedic, it has left me thinking, almost a fortnight after I saw it, still on such matters. I look forward to further features from McDonagh. youtube/watch?v=hUVl5hy0RMU
