Film Festival Report: Movie #3, Mystery Road A slow-burn murder mystery, set in rural Australia. Decent, but nothing special. (Hugo Weaving is in the movie; I absolutely did not recognize him.) A teenage girl has been found dead by the roadside; a detective who has just been assigned to his hometowns police force (after years away) is given the case. Spoiler: The villains are corrupt cops. Its not much of a spoiler; its obvious from very early in the movie. To be honest, this isnt a movie which does anything unusual for its genre; from the brooding, never-smiling hero to the final shootout (which the hero stupidly walks into alone), its pretty standard fare. But it does it all reasonably well; the lonely, wide-open spaces provide good atmosphere; and the racial undercurrent (the hero is part aboriginal, and looked down on by his colleagues because of it), while not central to the story, adds tension. A word, though, about how the movie is presented in the trailer. This is a movie which trades on building tension; until the final shootout, there is basically no violence (except a scene where the angry hero grabs a suspect by the throat). Pretty much every moment of violence in the movie is crammed together into the trailer. https://m.youtube/watch?v=GBQLENuIUbs
