Film Review: Vampire Academy could have worked as a sitcom but not on the big screen: Cast: Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, Danila Kozlovsky, Dominic Sherwood, Olga Kurylenko Director: Mark Waters Rating: ** Whats it about: Vampire films and their spinoffs became an instant rage after the Twilight series dominated pop culture and brought in big bucks at the box-office. Vampire Academy is an attempt to revisit the genre and cash in on the success of modern day TV series like Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl. However, it isnt a spoof but a girlie version of Harry Potter meets the Vampire Diaries. We are introduced three kinds of species - Moroi, Dhampir and Strigoi. The story revolves around three girls Rose (Zoey Deutch), Lissa (Lucy Fry) and Dimitri (Danila Kozlovsky) and their social hierarchy in the clan. Primarily targeted at the teenagers the film is a light hearted take on the vampire culture and its popularity. Whats hot: Among the cast, Zoey stands out and makes her character Rose interesting to the point that we miss her every time shes not in the frame. Her casual digs and sassy attitude works in getting the humor at the right places. Setting up the story in a high school environment works as Waters has directed Mean Girls one of the cult classic that spawned a series of films which tried to ape its formula but failed. There are moments which will make you chuckle simple because what you are watching is so idiotic and banal that its entertaining. Thankfully the director makes no qualms about what hes set off to make - a mindless blood sucking over the top girlie flick! Whats not: The films biggest drawback is that there is very little material to work upon. Once we are introduced to these girls and know their character traits there is hardly any scope for novelty. Also because there have been multiple films on the same genre and parodies that have released earlier, the film looks dated. The one liners arent that smart enough which only make the characters that much less interesting. What to do: Vampire Academy could have worked as a sitcom, unfortunately on the big screen its reduced to nothing more than a bunch of half baked gags.
