Film of The Year: Paweł Pawlikowskis ‘Ida’ came as a shock to me. In a year of releases celebrating constant movement and cutting energy (Whiplash, Interstellar) this Polish film masters an exceptionally crafted quality: stillness. The subject matter goes far beyond what you might expect for a film about post-war Communism. The starkness and the exploration of innocence and knowledge in this oppressive world is only made more startling with the black and white cinematography. A fascinating film with some incredible acting. Jx
