Final Movie TONIGHT August Rush with ROBIN WILLIAMS It was a great idea for an outdoor free Movie Festival, but ... The main idea for outdoor movies here at the Banks Schoolhouse in Inverness NS came right after our successful Music Festival this August. A large movie screen was painted at the side of the BS building to show music videos, introduce musicians and promote community events such as the visiting Saudis in Inverness. To kick off the Movie Festival, we selected a tribute to the late & great Robin Williams The past three nights at the Banks Rd have been unpredictable from a weather point of view and from audience attendance point of view ... One night we had slightly over 50 people in attendance - Last night, Saturday, was very damp and cold - yes, the whole feeling of watching movies outdoors under a starry sky is purely magical - the amount of preparation to make each evening a success is enormous. We are using borrowed projection and sound equipment and often, we encounter technical issues that need to be resolved on the fly while the movies are playing - Sound levels peak with different movies and can be disturbing to our neighbours if not monitored - Some language may be offensive in movies that are even rated PG14 -we dont preview all movies to be sure content is suitable for younger viewers. The movie tribute to Robin Williams came out of respect for his tremendous body of work but Good Morning Vietnam last night was a much deeper and even disturbing at times for younger viewers (we hadnt watching this movie since it was first released back in the late 80s) - Robin Williams films have a deep effect on viewers with topics that are comical yet realistic - We started the BS Movie Festival with Patch Adams - this movie is based on a true story with deep yet comical context - We plan to wrap up the movies this summer with one final Robin Williams feature today Sunday (weather permitting) ... well showcase AUGUST RUSH - 100% family content with lots of fabulous music. Join us for this farewell movie under the stars tonight! For next year, were tossing the idea of transmitting the movie audio via FM signal to cars without disturbing neighbours - the days are longer during the month of July and movies will still be playing past 11:00 pm - by transmitting sound thru FM signal to any FM radio receiver nearby, anyone can listen to clear stereo and at any volume level - it can still be a positive social experience but not exactly under the stars - the whole lawn chair and blanket feeling was unforgettable - we already spend a great deal of time in our cars commuting and driving everywhere. Sitting in a car to watch a movie is not as much of a novelty as the pure outdoor experience sitting on the lawn. Hey my own childhood memory of watching movies outdoors is vivid but then again it was under a drier, warmer meditteranian night sky - the weather uncertainty here in Cape Breton is our main concern - People get cold and damp, projection and sound equipment get very damp. We constructed a solid projection booth with side walls and shingle roof to reduce moisture/dampness but the overall weather uncertainty remains a challenge - Hey, nothing ventured nothing gained - our intentions have always been and will continue to be good - our efforts were brave and the support we received from friends, family and total strangers was beyond our expectations - the old saying build it and they will come still holds true and Im sure well figure the best solution for the BS Movie Festival - Come out tonight and be part of the final movie presentation - the young ones are running a first-class concession (and as you might have guessed, as parents, this was one creative way of giving our children a healthier alternative to indoor computer games and digital obsessions) ... we thought wed give other parents, grandparents, siblings, neighbours and friends an opportunity to bond during this great & free outdoor movie experience ... Lets see how next year shapes up - suggestions are welcome - Thank you! MICHAEL NIKAS & Family!
