Finalist question #3: How many script ideas do you develop in an average year? Do you work on more than one script at a time? I develop around two script ideas per year and generally write one at a time. Out of dozens of concepts we believe to be viable, at least three or four make to the treatment stage. At least two of those treatments become screenplays. Yes, we work on different scripts simultaneously. I do, but I try never to work on the same stage of any two projects simultaneously. If I can be breaking one story, writing another first draft, and polishing another script, Im very happy. I find it helpful to be able to jump from one to the next, kind of like avoiding a traffic jam by cutting off the interstate -- you take back roads for a stretch, then once you get back to the highway the road has cleared. Having multiple scripts hanging over my head sharpens my focus and really motivates me to work harder on each. I come up with lots of bad ideas each year, and about 3 or 4 per year that I consider worth pursuing. Im typically writing two at any given time. (Well add more responses to these questions tomorrow.)
