Finally #1 ~American Pie~ By Don McLean If you were to ask your grandparents, or your parents for that matter, on what happened on February 3, 1959.. The Answer would be universal... The answer lies within the three souls who lost their lives in a plane crash outside of Clear Lake, Iowa during a winter storm. The three biggest names in music at the time were Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and (The Big Bopper) Jiles Perry Richardson Jr. These three men were universally believed to be the reason that music lost its innocence during that winter night. The day has been called The day the music died. Now obviously music did not die, but it took on a new form after these men passed on. But one man stood on a pedestal and told a story that would bring us back to where it all began and how music changed afterwards. Don McLean wrote this song in 1971 in his American Pie Album. This song has been widely considered to be the best song ever written. The song is well known for its cryptic lyrics, most noticeably the lines I met a girl who sang the blues, and I asked her for some happy news. She just smiled and turned away. The line surely pertains to Janis Joplin and how she overdosed on heroin. Many of these lines are cryptically written to tell the events of what happened after the plane crash. However, why is this song #1? Quite honestly, it is a storied song that is told perfect. It has a very up beat tone and it is hard not to sing the chorus every time you hear it. Although many people dont know what the song is a bout, that can get into the details of what the songs message is, and the fact that it the music before the crash still lives on today. American Pie is the opus of story telling in song. Every time the last verse is being played, I feel the urge to sing it as loudly as possible so everyone can hear it. This song is what put Don McLean on the map and it is pretty much his signature song. It shows that the 3 men that were admired (The Father, Son, and the holy ghost) still live on in music even to this day. youtube/watch?v=uAsV5-Hv-7U
