Finally! After over 13 months of solo planning, I finally undertook and completed my Queen Scout Expedition through the Snowy Mountains in NSW, Australia. Us 5 boys aged 15-17 began the full-pack expedition at Round Mountain after two days of travelling by car (1117km and 15hrs) from Adelaide, South Australia. We followed the Australian Alps Walking Trail for 3 days before making our way off track as we traversed across the Main Range for the remaining 3 days. The end point was at Thredbo. Through doing this, we had to endure some of Australia’s gruelling terrain and weather with the threat of snowstorms and bushfires to be both taken into consideration. Furthermore, it has been one of the most physically and mentally demanding hikes that I have ever done. We were however awarded with some amazing and breathtaking views as in some cases we were above the clouds. Overall, we hiked a total distance of 101.4km whilst climbing 15 separate mountains. 13 of which were over 2000m (6561ft) in altitude. We finished off the trip by waking early (4:30am) on the last day to enjoy breakfast and the sunrise from Australia’s highest peak: Mt Kosciusko which sits at 2228m (7309ft) above sea level. This was by far one of my greatest achievements. To plan and be able to undertake a trek of these large proportions was fantastic. It was incredible to see the dream I had over a year ago come to life and for me to be able to fully experience it! Thankyou all those who helped make this possible including my parents and leaders who aided me greatly with being my examiner, providing information and assisting with the travelling. Finally, thankyou to the 4 great guys, I was able to spend the end of my holidays with and for the fantastic memories and making this dream come to life! I feel that this is what Venturers is about! We are no longer younger Scouts where our leaders plan, organise and run the set activities. YOU choose what you want to do, and YOU get the opportunity to undertake it yourself. MAKE THE MOST OF IT!!
