Finally a large media outlet covers how Teach For America is a fundamentally problematic and regressive organization that turns well intended students into poor kid saviors. Students in the most challenging situations need the most experienced and nuanced teachers, not the least. However no one ever seems to talk about the need for genuine teacher recruitment from low income communities. These kids need educators who are trained, committed to their community and know where they are coming from, not bright eyed college kids on some 1 year poverty tourism. We seem to be great at recruiting, training, and funding the education of public servants for the military (who guess what? Are most often poor youth and/or youth of color) but we cant seem to get it together to do the same for educators, who are arguably the most important public servants in any society. In fact we constantly underpay, over test, and attack their ability to teach. I think we need to recruit and honor teachers so kids can have high quality long term teachers who can be reflections of their classes.
