Finally, after 2 weeks of what felt like 70% hearing loss, my ears - TopicsExpress

Finally, after 2 weeks of what felt like 70% hearing loss, my ears have been cleared up. My family, I am sure, will be thrilled with not having to yell at me in the same room and having the TV cranked up so loudly. Now, I can hear so well that drying off with a towel this morning seemed loud. The problem was the dreaded ear wax, which seems to have been aggravated by all of the travel I have been doing of late. Sorry to get all old-man remedy on you, but are some things I have learned. * Wash your ears, of course, but it will make little difference for wax build up inside. Better to get a little squeeze bulb or syringe and shoot some warm water into your ear canal every once in a while. * Q-tips are the Enemy. As tempted as you might be to stick one in your ear and clean things out, it will actually make the problem worse by impacting whats in there and (worse) you run the very real risk of rupturing your eardrum. * If you do get wax buildup, get some hydrogen peroxide and an eye dropper and lay down. Get a whole bunch of hydrogen peroxide in there and lay there for at least 15 minutes per ear. Many people (including me) make the mistake of stopping after they dont hear the snap, crackle, pop sound the 2(HO) makes anymore. Keep going. After everything is softened up, now use a syringe/bulb to irrigate your ear. This may take multiple tries. * Keep your ears dry after any fluid treatments, so you dont macerate the inside of your ear with all that fluid and get swimmers ear. My doctor recommended blowing a hair dryer on low to help speed up the drying. * You can use a Water Pik instead of the syringe/bulb solution after treating with 2(HO). IT MUST BE SET TO LOW and you should NOT jam it in your ear. Hold it back and aim for the ear canal from several angles. I recommend standing in the tub when you do this. Also, use warm water; cold water on the inner ear is unpleasant and can start nausea/dizziness from vertigo. Dont try this solution for too long... give your ears a break. * So-called ear candles? NO. The suction they supposedly generate is not enough and really, do you want a burning candle mere inches from your hair? * If unsure about any loss of hearing, always consult your physician or practitioner. Hopefully this will help you.
