Finally, after more a less 2weeks of room hunting, i moved in to my own place last nite. Its a huge place, located at Phnom Penhs prime location in Boeung Keng Kang (BKK) area. Just 2mins from the Independence Monument and a walking distance to cool cafes, restaurants and many hang out places. Its on the third-floor of a bungalow of an old business woman. She lives down stair with her family. We call her Grandma. Im sharing the place with 2 girls; one is from France and another is from Australia. The Frenchy has been living in Phnom Penh for almost 6mths working for an engineering company and the Aussie is taking a gap year to write a screenplay for a TV show. The place is still empty, only has basic furnitures. The wifi is not yet connected. The kitchen has no utensil whatsoever. Bedding needs to get new ones. But it has alot of potential. The balcony is huge that joint to an open air living room with a great view of a temple pagoda at night. We could have a BBQ party or just chill enjoying the view. Oh the feeling to finally having your clothes out of the backpack and hang it inside a wardrobe, to take out your toiletries from the toiletry bag and arrange it over the sink shelf and to finally have a key to your own room are by far the greatest simple pleasure in life for me. I was homeless for 19mths. Slept at friends place, random strangers couches, hostel dormitory and wild camping. Mostly, relying on peoples kindness. I remembered the time i was in Shanghai. That was hard. 3mths without a proper place, hopped from one host to another while working at a cocktail bar at the same time. I cant even remember how many hosts i had there. Sometimes just for couple of nites, Some for more than 2weeks. What made it even harder, i had to find host within 1hr walking distance to where i worked. Once, it was so far even by taxi took an hour, so that night i decided to just sleep outside of the metro station rather than pay for the taxi fare. I also slept more less for 2 weeks at the bar where I worked (goo.gl/HNkySd). The boss was a cool japanese guy. I also remembered my time in Istanbul. After hopping to several different hosts, then i found a cool hostel that allowed me to crash their place for free as long as i want. I cant believed it too then. One of the guys that managed the place explained, Youre not our customer, we treat you as a friend, so please take care of the place like its yours as well. I was that guy that lived at the attic of the hostel for more than a month. I had sort of my own space with a small window on the roof. During winter, on the first morning of snowfall, i woke up, opened the window and the view just took my breathe away. That was my first time seeing snow in my life. Oh Im excited to start decorate my place. Im a home person, i guess. I rather spend my money to buy a good couch than a smartphone. I rather do get-together with friends at my place than go out to a club, for example. So, Ive been checking out some hardware shops, Russian Market, Central Market, Orussey Market and some other small independent deco shops just to get some ideas. Give me a month, then you my dear friends of the world are welcome to crash my place in Phnom Penh. And I cant wait to have our own home together, sayang.
