Finally decided to watch Youre Next this morning. It definitely exceeded my expectations, which were pretty low, to be honest. I wasnt aware that Adam Wingard had directed it; I was impressed with his segments in V/H/S and V/H/S/2. Its an interesting spin on the invasion/revenge genre, with surprisingly awesome soundtrack which is reminiscent of grindhouse films from the 1970s/80s. I also watched The Sacrament, which I had no idea was written/directed by Ti West. Again, I loved his segment in V/H/S; and am a big fan of The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers. Sadly, it turned out to be absolutely lackluster. Its basically a retelling of Jim Jones and the Jonestown Massacre, down to the actor playing the antagonist undeniably resembling Jim Jones. They werent subtle about making the story similar at all. I kept waiting for there to be some kind of creative plot device that would allow West to put a unique spin on the story to be introduced, since everybody knows how the events of Jonestown unfolded pretty well at this point. That never came, so I was left feeling as if I had wasted an hour and a half being told a story which Ive already heard countless times before.
