Finally got around to watching Spike Lees Oldboy. Its not as bad - TopicsExpress

Finally got around to watching Spike Lees Oldboy. Its not as bad as everyone is claiming. This is coming from someone who is not a fan of Lee or Brolin, and not a huge fan of the overrated original Oldboy. The film, viewed technically, is a good film, but it lacks heart. There were multiple long uncut tracking shots that were very complicated. The hammer fight scene in the remake lacks the phantom swings (that are at least 5 feet away from any sign of connecting) of the original. The remakes hammer fight is far superior and take place on multiple stories of a building. Also, the motivations are better explained in the remake. The psychological conditioning is more complex, yet believable. All of the fight choreography was beautiful and brutal. The problem with the film is that it feels emotionless. Sam Jackson seems like he is in one of his straight to video movies. Hes just doing this for the paycheck. Brolin is great as the tortured Doucett but the before 20 years in a room Doucett doesnt really connect of feel real. I had a tough time with the ending too. It seems like Spike Lee went with an easier choice for the ending even though the reveal before the ending was the same. Im not sure if Lee made the decision because of the difference he wrote for Doucetts conditioning, the problem people would have with the choice Dae-Su Oh made in the original, or because Lee just wanted to put his own twist on the ending. Either way, the choice at the end would never be allowed to happen by another character from earlier in the film. Oldboy is not a bad film. It is just okay. Have any of you guys seen it? imdb/title/tt1321511/?ref_=nv_sr_1
