Finally had a chance to see Only God Forgives. Wow! This was like a acid trip. Nicolas Winding Refn has gone back to his storytelling roots and created a neo-noir crime drama that is in fact a journey into hell where a Thai policeman name Lieutenant Chang is a God of Vengeance in Bangkok. The film is beautifully shot, each frame looking like a painting. Refn has stripped the film down to true minimalism. If you thought Ryan Gosling was a man of few words in Drive. He is mute in this film. Kristin Scott Thomas is the true gem in the film playing a merciless and terrifying mafia godmother" combining elements of Lady Macbeth and Donatella Versace. Only God Forgives has a very basic story that is strongly tied to film-noir but in the hands of Refn it becomes a film filled with hellish surreal visions, metaphysics, incestuous unions, bloody killings of the innocent, and old testament judgement in the form of sword wielding rogue policeman. This film is not for everyone ..... if you have seen Valhalla Rising and enjoyed it than I believe you will enjoy this film. Which explores similar themes and ideas.
