Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Ephesians 6:10 When Paul speaks about being strong, he is not referring to human strength. God knows that we are weak in ourselves. Jesus said, “Without me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). God does not despise our weakness. He loves us, but He also wants us to grow in the power of His strength. In Jesus we have life; in Him we have wisdom; He is our strength. We need strength and power to do the things the Lord desires of us and to resist all that tries to hinder us. This is why we are awarded access to God’s mighty power. It pleases God to allow His mighty power to be revealed in human weakness. Then He receives the glory. He does not receive glory because we are weak; He receives glory because we, in our weakness, are open to His power. In 2 Corinthians 4:7 Paul says, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.” Too often we focus on the weak and lamentable earthen vessel, but God focuses on the treasure within. That treasure is Jesus, the power of the Spirit and the abundant life. The fact that the vessel is weak merely confirms that it is God who has placed His treasure in it. And it is the treasure within that we are to make use of. We must not resist the Spirit’s command to grow stronger in the Lord. We need to ask the Lord to rid us of any contempt of strength and remove any self-pity or unwillingness in our lives. In order to obey God, we need to become even stronger in the Lord. It is so wonderful that this power is available to us and is found in us.
