Finally, some sense comes to the schools, although not by choice. It is painfully obvious that far too few Americans really understand the First Amendment. First, there is NO SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE ever mentioned in any way in the Constitution/Bill of Rights. NOWHERE does it state that symbols like the Ten Commandments must not be allowed on state or federal property. The First Amendment SPECIFICALLY states that the government MAY NOT ESTABLISH A NATIONAL RELIGION. This means that the government cant make everyone become Catholic...or Methodist or Muslim or any other faith. Placing a carving of the Ten Commandments is NOT religion specific, nor does it establish any one faith. Second, and this is something that most people fail to grasp, the First Amendment goes on to state that the government MAY NOT PROHIBIT THE EXERCISE OF RELIGION of any citizen. That means that kids can choose to pray at school, write papers about God, Buddha or any other deity they believe in, or practice any other belief they may have. And schools are violating the Constitution when they suspend children for practicing their faith. This young girl was well within her right to write about God being her idol and the school was wrong to tell her she couldnt. thenewamerican/culture/faith-and-morals/item/16838-student-gets-perfect-score-on-rejected-god-is-my-idol-essay
