Finally the US is contemplating military support to Ukrainian military more seriously after the Russian incursion. The US was just short of saying it was an invasion. Putin is playing realpolitik, banking on Russian nationalism, pride and prejudice but renegading on the promise, benefit of the sovereignty guarantee Russia once provided to Ukraine. The EU is trying to be pragmatic for their economic concerns but forgetting that this is one man who will play/push hard in every weakness they see in Western action and policies. The US has a responsibility. Sanctions definitely show promise, but is imprecise and takes time to alter behavior. Ukraine needs help and the West must come forward. Why cant the west see that Putin has put in too much in the Ukraine matter that he can not take the exit the West has provided to him? He knows he has been given an exit but he is not willing to avail it. The exit is a political suicide for him at this point and defeat for the nation as the drummed up the nationalism factor too much. The Western leaders acting a bit too dovish and that could also be dangerous. Putin wants to fight it out but he definitely knows his limitations, so he is going for a long stretched low intensity battle. The West should step up to the plate and confront, and we have already seen Putin responds to strength. Putin has been toying with the territorial integrity of Ukraine as he pleased. This is his way of showing to the Ukrainians that he he just can so he does and will if he wants to. That is one way to psychologically keep the Ukrainians under dog. This big brotherly attitude and influence has been rejected by the vast majority of the Ukrainians and the rise of their spirit of independence and backbone is very explicit. The West must reinforce the backbone the Ukrainians already showed through their latest military wins over Russia. A small resource constrained Ukrainian army winning over organized Russian training and backing. That is a huge blow to Russia, they admit or not. If Putin is worried about anything, is this backbone. The government in Kiev will reintroduce a military draft this fall and is seeking U.S. support and special partner status, Mykhailo Koval, the deputy head of Ukraine’s National Defense and Security Council, told reporters yesterday. The U.S. has a “range of tools” to help Ukraine and discussions with the country’s government are under way, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in Washington.
