Finally, they are acknowledging all the damage done by Reading Recovery! No help to those struggling readers who it was set up to help! ATT: PRINCIPALS, TEACHERS, AND LEARNING SUPPORT STAFF University of Sydney, SPELD NSW & LDA are presenting an afternoon seminar on Reading Recovery and Failure of the New Zealand National Literacy Strategy When: Wednesday 3 September 2014 from 4.00-6.00pm. Registration from 3.30pm Where: University of Sydney, Faculty of Education (further details will be sent to you upon registration) This presentation summarises arguments and evidence showing that New Zealands National Literacy Strategy has failed and the role of Reading Recovery in contributing to that failure. Data from the Progress in International Reading Literacy Studies (2001, 2006, 2011) indicates that no progress has been made in reducing New Zealands relatively large inequities in literacy achievement outcomes. An examination of annual monitoring reports of Reading Recovery data reveals the nationally implemented program has been of marginal benefit in general, and of virtually no benefit to those struggling readers who are most at risk of failing to learn to read. Factors contributing to the failure of New Zealands National Literacy Strategy and what can be done to overcome the problem are discussed.
