Finally watched that doc from some years ago on fashion photographer, Bill Cunningham (zeitgeistfilms/billcunninghamnewyork/) What a great film & an utterly charming guy! Make sure to watch the extras, as there are some choice tidbits that didnt make it into the movie, including his photos of movers wheeling his possessions (including many filing cabinets) through the streets of Manhattan when he got evicted from his Carnegie Hall apt./studio - could the powers that be not have hired a moving van or is that how folks move in the Big Apple? A few things I wished the filmmakers had answered though: where was he from? (he has quite a New England accent & Wikipedia says, Boston). When evicted from Carnegie Hall (despicable action!), how did he score such a sweet apt. with a Central Park view? (did some society matron pull some strings? & where were all those fat cats to save him & others from eviction?). Maybe most obvious of all - how many miles a day does he ride on his bike & how many miles does he think hes ridden in his life? (& why on earth does he need heart medication? he takes a few pills during one scene). For those of you who dont know much about him, hes going to be 85 on March 11 & as far as I know, he still bikes day & night around NYC to take photos! I hope that if he ever retires, he finds a home for his vast archive of negatives & prints, which almost completely filled his tiny monastic apt. As many people said in the film, hes a fashion historian as much as a photographer. His decades long record of what people were wearing on the streets of the city is invaluable.
