Financial woes crippling film industry-Mangachi By Esther Mkwala Executive Director of Achievers Production Hellings Mangachi says financially and resource constrains are a big blow to film industry in Malawi. Speaking Sunday at the launch of “The web “ in Mzuzu, Mangachi said there is untapped potential and talented up and coming artists whose productions have been compromised due to financial hiccups. “There are a lot of film makers that are failing to do what we have done today due to lack of resources; and for your own information this is not even our first movie, we produced another one before but due to lack of financial problems it did not get publicity,” he said. Mangachi appealed to the Film Association of Malawi (FAMA ) to promote the growth of the industry in the region now that it has a chapter. “Remember both management and staff of FAMA, young achievers are selling in one boat, if we start to sink, everyone will sink,” he said. In his remarks, Film Association of Malawi Northern chapter president, Joel Mkandawire, described the launch a ‘milestone’. “Being the first film to be produced since the launch of FAMA Northern chapter, we consider it as an achievement. “The production by the young people as well as its good quality will help people mentor the production and also know what FAMA is; and what film makers can do in Northern region,” he said. Mkandawire further congratulated the young achievers and other co-producers; Nexgen film, Eminet pictures for what he described as ‘wonderful production’ and the concept. Said Mkandawire, “what is so unique in this production is the theme, it is about HIV which is a concern to the entire society and that’s what FAMA wants, not just movies of people beating up each other with no apparent reason.” Mkandawire said FAMA will develop a proper structure of marketing to film makers through various trainings still in the pipeline. “As FAMA Northern chapter, we are here to advice and mentor them on how to market their films, because there is no proper structure for marketing films in Malawi,” he added. Aspiring councillor of Mzuzu Jack Mande guest of honour at the event, donated ten thousand kwacha. The event was spiced up by different artists of Mzuzu, (O.B) Obadiah, Black Yuthi, Fk, TNM, and Young Dre among others. FAMA Northern chapter was introduced three months ago as a pilot project to decentralize its nation office power, this is the first time such an event is happening in the northern region.
