Finding Fanny - A quirky look at life and its discoveries and revelations. After the well received Cocktail, Homi Adanjania and Deepika Padukone team up once again to bring us the rather unusally titled Finding Fanny. Immediatley this quirky title gets you thinking, whatever on earth is this movie about? Deepika Padukone has Arjun Kapoor, Pankaj Kapoor, Nasureedin Shah, Dimple Kapadia and Ranveer Singh (in a guest appearence) for company in this movie. I have been repeatedly told over the past month or so that Finding Fanny will sink even before it sets sail. Why? Because its going to one of those films that wont ignite an ounce of interest in the critics and masses alike. I agree at the outset that this isnt your normal off the shelf commercial cinema. And from the rushes one can confindently say that Finding Fanny is for a very niche audience. But with that downside does Finding Fanny live up MY expectations? Set in the fictional village of Pocouli Angie (Deepika Padukone), a young widow lives with her mother in law Rosie (Dimple Kapadia) who is often referred to as the first lady of the village. Angie’s best friend Ferdie (Nasureedin Shah) is the local post master one day recieves an undelivered letter he had once posted to his lady love, Stephanie Fernandez proposing marriage to her. The letter never reached her and is back in his hands 46 years later. Angie convinces him to go meet her and find out what she would have said had she received it. Angie, and a bunch of oddballs set out on a journey to find Fanny for him and end up discovering their own selves, their desires and their love! Deepika Padukone is brilliant in her role as Angie. The ease at which she paces herself throughout the movie is remarkable. This definitely creates an instant liking for her charcater, I cant imagine anyone else in the role of Angie. Arjun Kapoor is fascinating to watch, he seems to be growing well as an actor perfectly balancing his angst and innocence. Nasseruddin Shah (IN MY OPINION) is brilliant. He proves onces again that he can mould himself into any character he plays. Pankaj Kapur is marvellous to watch as Pedro. Dimple Kapadia is up to he usual standards, especially in the scenes following her discovery that Pedro has just been using her. Yes the script isn’t a work of genius, however the sheer simplicity of the script and the unpredictability of the characters are a strong point in this movie. Despite its light moments, the film has a strong story to tell as long as you are willing to look beyond the exterior of the movie. As the story progresses you discover what a master Homi is. Shot brilliantly, Homis storytelling is engrossing. At no point will you get bored, nor will you stop smiling. Comming to the music, the only commercial track on the album is Shake Your Bootiya, however the album is a gem and will be best appreciated once you have watched the movie. By no means is Finding Fanny a cinematic masterpiece but its a quirky look at life and its discoveries and revelations. Granted the movie would appeal to a niche audience, but it is not often that I can recommend a film with this confidence. Don’t miss this. If you have the patience to see what Finding Fanny has in store for you. I left thinking that no matter what the situation or circumstances are, there is always something to love about life. Finding Fanny gets an exceptional 8/10
