Finding Your Balance Bob Beluschak is hoping to restore balance in his life. This after suffering several unexpected falls this year. “If I lean too far to the right, in my case, it will make me a little bit more unsteady,” Beluschak says His sense of direction was intact. Beluschak and his wife found their way to this balance fair sponsored by Lee Memorial Health System. “I’ve never been through a balance test before,” Beluschak says. “I also went through a couple other tests; one for hearing and we’re going to go through another test yet.” Turns out several factors influence balance; issues with any one of them can shake your foundation. “There’s three spheres that cause falls potentially,” says Mark Tesoro, who works on injury prevention with Lee Memorial Health System. “There’s a physical aspect. You have conditions that cause you to fall. There’s certainly a behavioral aspect. You make poor decisions; you over-estimate your skill set. And then the final aspect is the environmental aspect. So you need to make sure that home environment is safe and that can be everything from clutter to lighting to footwear to pets.” As people age they tend to worry about their balance, and for good reason. Falls are the top cause of non-fatal injuries. Side-stepping a fall is no accident. “I’ve been doing exercises all my life. When I hit a certain age a few years ago, all of a sudden I got these ailments that I didnt know I had. So I want to try to prevent them,” Beluschak says. After checking vision, hearing, neurological health, strength, coordination - even a medication inventory - experts can better assess and treat what’s leaving people off kilter. “Quite frankly, falls are not a normal part of aging. Dont let somebody tell you that you’re 60 or 70 or 80 and that it’s just part of growing old because it’s not,” says Tesoro. Beginning with a proper diagnosis, people can put balance back in their life.
