Fine, fine New York theatre weekend. Teresa Sanderson knocked it out of the park with Matthew Ivan Bennetts elegant, eloquent ERIC(A), Plan-B Theatres first visit to United Solo Theatre Festival. And then a pure pleasure to watch old pros make it all look so effortless - Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in rep in NO MANS LAND and WAITING FOR GODOT, Pinter and Beckett, done exactly right. Yes, GODOT can indeed be truly, laughs-from-the-gut funny - I am thrilled to finally see a production that focused on the relationship between GoGo and DeeDee - suddenly the absurdity was inviting. Definitive in my book. Director Sean Matthias blew my mind. And the revival of THE GLASS MENAGERIE should truly be considered the definitive production - Williams done exactly right, as though those lines were being spoken for the first time, a perfectly realized memory play with each actor making bold, exciting choices within the same memories - the play was raw and dangerous from the opening moment through the final blackout. John Tiffany offered a master class in every element of direction - by the time Cherry Jones Amanda breathed you selfish dreamer I realized I was holding my breath. Bliss.
