Finished Farewell, Fred Voodoo- A letter from Haiti by Amy Wilentz. She describes the aftermath from the terrible earthquake and which charities/aid groups work and which ones dont, all with a look at Haiti history and culture. Bottom line- Haitians need to be a big part of the process because all these missionaries, celebs (except Sean Penn and Dr. Megan Coffee, who actually get it), and world rescues think they can just come in and make it all better, totally ignoring Haitian beliefs and culture. BTW, the term Fred Voodoo is used by the reporters and journalists to describe the average Haitian on the street and in the shanty towns. Just shows the lack of respect and awareness of Haitians and voodoo, which is an ancient African religion. I feel I now have a better understanding of how we can go about helping people after a disaster of the magnitude of the Haitian earthquake.
