Finished the final draft of my Thesis Proposal :) Its about how the poor subsidise the rich; to what extent scavengers in Payatas benefit the government, corporations, and resident in wealthier areas. 18,000 words and its just the proposal for the thesis... a lot of work obviously but hopefully goes well. I think theres a lot of potential in the topic, as of course I would being the author. Partly thats because the population and poverty have been so heavily underestimated in Payatas, like many other slums. For the National Capital Region, they say that 2.6% of families live in poverty... 2.6%! And then the official figure on population in Payatas is about a quarter of what it really is. Basically theyre hiding the poor... Other interesting things that cropped up during the research, the Philippines pays about as much on the interest payments for national debt as education and healthcare combined (roughly P250 billion). Also that people were relocated to Payatas from other squatter areas, basically so they would end up scavenging and save the government money. But after the trashslide in 2000 killing hundreds of people when they relocated some of the survivors they didnt give them the house and lot... they gave them a mortgage on the house of thousands of dollars, with 6% interest every year. And they said they were doing the squatters a favour...
