Finnish Swimming Association President Sami Wahlman and synchro Head Coach Katri Kuikka: ”Brilliant people have made the event a success!” On the verge of the last Competition day 3.8. President of the Finnish Swimming Association Sami Wahlman is sipping coffee with the green T-shirts at their lounge in Mäkelänrinne swim center. ”The event has been a huge effort for us, and it has been a great joy.” ”Brilliant people have been involved as volunteers, especially from synchro circles around the world.” ”Without them this wouldnt have been possible”, Mr. Wahlman says. Facebook and online-tv now in use This is the first time an FSA event of these proportions is available round the world (for a small sum of money) as online-tv and in Facebook. ”The experience is encouraging. The Finnish Swimming Association bought the online-service from a company for non-profit costs.” ”The Facebook-pages have been a great platform for pictures, comments and info. Page visits have soared during the Competition week.” As an organizer of the Competition event, one objective for the FSA is to create a significant positive turn for Finnish synchro and aquatics disciplines in general. Mr. Sami Wahlman is confident the goal has been attained. ”We know from experience that international events kindle enthusiastic interest and dedication among newcomers.” Head Coach looks happy FSA Head Coach of synchro Katri Kuikka, 35, got hooked on synchronised swimming like many others by watching the swimmers in the water. ”I was less than 10 years old as I stayed by the poolside at Malmi swim center to watch two fairly skilled Finnish synchro swimmers do their routines together.” ”I made my mind up quickly. This is what I want to do, too.” Young Katri Kuikka had background in figure skating, which was a good basis for starting to do figures in three dimensions in the water. Over time synchro became her vocation and she has never hesitated. ”Our four synchro swimmers in this Competition have reached their best performances. As a coach I am pleased. Certainly the discipline attracts more attention over the years in Finland.” The number of synchro enthusiasts here is now less than 500 and it is steadily growing. The best competitors come from the north, the city of Oulu. ”General knowledge of this great, versatile discipline is increasing. And the skills of the trainees are improving progressively.” Text: Outi Pihlaja Photos: Mika Ruusunen
