Fire Name Ox-Cart Fire Date: June 20, 2013; 3:30 p.m. Start Date June 6th; reported on June 8, 2013 Location Ridge between North and South Rock Creeks; 6 miles southeast of Poncha Pass; Sangre de Cristo Wilderness Area; Sangre de Cristo Mountains; Saguache Ranger District; Rio Grande National Forest. Size 28 acres; Perimeter measured on June 14. Containment 0%; no date for expected containment. Fuel Aspen, Douglas fir, bristlecone pine Fire behavior Occasional individual tree torching, creeping ground fire Structures None threatened Closures Temporary area closure from North Decker Creek southeast to Nieland Creek including FSR 980 and 982. Cause Lightning. Personnel Varies. No suppression taking place at this time. Daily planning and monitoring. Comments The fire is clearly visible from U.S. Highway 285. Drift smoke may be visible on either side of the northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains likely to impact the area. The Rio Grande National Forest plans to follow Wilderness management objectives by allowing the Ox Cart Fire play its natural role on the landscape. A management plan is in place to suppress parts or all of the fire if necessary to prevent it from threatening or damaging private property or other resource values. Recent fuel moisture measurements show the duff below the trees still has a lot of moisture in it. Low to Moderate fire activity is expected with occasional single tree torching and some short spotting.
