Fire Razes Border Market In Katsina By Muazu Elazeh, Katsina An early morning fire on Wednesday razed down multi million naira Magama border market at Magama village of Jibia local government area of Katsina State. Magama border market is one of the busiest markets in the state and deals in volumes of food stuff, clothes and other house hold items. Eyewitness said the inferno started around 4am and razed no fewer than 370 shops in the popular market. “It began near one of the shops from the eastern flanks, a resident who does not want to be mentioned said insisting that “only God can say the damage this will cost so many families” But another source said the fire might have been caused by a mad man who set fire to warm himself owing to the current cold weather in the state. Our correspondent reports that the market which has been one of the major hub of economic activities in the state, houses several stalls belonging to both residence and indigenes of neighbouring Maradi state of Niger republic. Although shop owners and relevant authorities are still taking stock as at the time of writing this report, sources said properties worth millions of naira were destroyed. Among early sympathisers to the market was the chairman of Jibia LG, Aminu Lawal who while sympathising with shop owners, described the inferno as most unfortunate. Lawal said that the fire was an unfortunate situation that has caused serious setbacks to the council area, the affected victims and indeed the state at large. He appealed to both the state and federal government to come to the aid of the victims noting that the damages caused by the fire was above what the council could handle. The council boss however said an exhaustive inventory had been taken by the LG assuring that “we will assist the best way we can.”
