Fire Safety Tip - May This month we encourage you to locate your fire extinguishers (you have a couple of them, right?) and make sure that they are still operable. First: check the arrow indicator on the extinguisher to see if it points to the green zone. If so it is operable. If the arrow points to the red zone OR if the extinguisher is over 10 years old it is probably a good idea to replace it. Do not “test” your extinguisher by releasing a small amount of the extinguishing agent. Any release will render the extinguisher inoperable for further use. Next: ask yourself if, in an emergency, would you instinctively know where the nearest extinguisher is and how to operate it? In the event of a fire, remember to call 911 immediately and report the emergency. The next step can go one of two ways. If the fire is small and you have clear access to an exit, then use your extinguisher to suppress the fire and minimize the damage. However, if the fire is potentially able to cut off your exit path or has grown too large for a hand held extinguisher then exit immediately to a safe location outside the residence and wait for help to arrive. Remember the basics of Fire Extinguisher use: PASS P - Pull the pin. A - Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire. S - Squeeze the handle. S - Sweep the nozzle back and forth at the base of the fire. Stay Safe out there!
