Fire Update July 24, 2014 - Siege of 2014 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Cooler temperatures and precipitation have allowed for effective line production on the Logging Unit Complex now at 30% contained.... with 1,193 personnel staffing the fire camp we anticipate more containment effectiveness in the next several days ahead of the next heat wave. Lines are holding and strengthening of lines will be the objective.... great job NW Team 1..... inciweb info at inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/3973/ Shaniko Butte fire at 40,575 is at 80% containment and has very few hot spots left... this fire will be turned into a Type 3 incident with a small organization to manage the mop up, rehab and patrol of the perimeter... thanks to Ross Williams and NW Team 6.... inciweb info at inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/3960/ In anticipation of more fire activity we currently are hosting 3 BIA National Helicopter modules Ute Mountain, Ft. Washakie and Crow Agency.... also assigned is a Task Force Leader from California BIA, 2 Strike team Leaders from Ft Apache Agency as well as 3 Type 6 engines form Ft Apache, 1 Type 6 engine from Southern Pueblo Agency, and a Type 6 engine from Spokane Agency...... along with our own staff... The engine crew with Vernon Tias Sr. the fearless leader, the Fuels crew with Joel Thompson and Glenn Smith the one and only Batman.... the IHC crew is here and will be available on Sunday..... The human factor of wildland fire behavior goes much further than simply assessing the readiness and how the firefighters maintain safety.... this human factor also must incorporate the emotional and mental status of these individuals to assess the needs of the firefighter in the sense of are they available and capable of functioning in a hazardous and often extremely dangerous environment... they are not machines but men and women.... and are very human whom together.... Do very extraordinary things..... some may call their actions heroic.... We simply do our duty as taught and take care of each other so we can continue to help the rez, the region and the Nation.... so in a sense... The fire organization does not make individual heroes but does heroic deeds as a whole.... while developing leadership and a cohesive family... Have a great day and please pray for our firefighters, the families and those who have made a sacrifice for you..... heal soon to our injured employees and be well my family and friends across the globe.
