Fire Update July 29, 2014 - Siege of 2014 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Weather is becoming hotter and drier - one of the watchout situations and think about the common denominators of tragedy & near miss fires.... on isolated portions of large fires or in mop up stage..... keep your situational awareness keen and stay alert, remain calm, think clearly, act decisively number 6 of the ten standard firefighting orders... We enter day 17 of this elongated period where we are still conducting suppression on the fires that resulted from the lightning storm of July 12, 2014 I look at the refreshed firefighters locally, I am in awe of their resilience.... their ability to come back from a tragic event and be able to move forward despite the emotional trauma we endured as an organization.... that we are able to welcome back our employees and our friends Inez Jones & Dogat Victoria Spino home and await their eventual return to the organization..... the staff is completing all the necessary logistical, financial, operational and functional areas of Shaniko Butte fire.... Logging Unit Complex will be handed off today to a Type II Incident Management Team.... it remains active and we are not ou of the woods yet... Shaniko Butte 90% contained with 150 personnel remaining Logging Unit 80% contained 1,073 personnel remaining Lightning still a high probability... dry lightning that has a 66% chance or greater of starting new fires with any strike... we are ramping up to meet the potential... also conducting patrols and detection on any sleepover fires that could possibly occur... We are ready.... For those that believe there are no more heroes... A quote after the siege of 87, in a training session firefighters were discussing the events that occurred that year, multiple fires from over 10,000 fire ignitions and like this year... all firefighting resource tapped out where the national guard and Canadian resources called in.... men and women spending 21 days online to respond to fires.. sacrificing time with families, away from their own communities... weary, tired.... but focused and above all courageous to conduct their duty.... the duty to protect each other, the lives of the public, property and then the natural resources.... The fire service is in itself heroic in mission and function.... individually we are simple men and women of all races, of all creeds, of multiple nationalities and of one unified and courageous effort..... to battle mother natures fire events... Look at the staff here at Warm Springs Fire Management.... young and old.. (implying myself LOL) people who voluntarily walk into harms way... we understand the risks and train and do thing to mitigate the risk yet it remains... and we still walk into the inferno and battle the flames.... we are not individually heroic but as an organization do heroic deeds.... I am proud of each and evry one of these extraordinary men and women.... the battle continues.. its our fire season now... Have a good day people.... its going to be a hot one today!
