When Frontline Express visited the scene, victims were all in tears as fire and smoke covered the entire area. Some of the victims including Mr. Timothy Nwaiwu, Mrs. Chidinma Nganwuchu and Mrs. Ogu Ann, said they were in their homes when the fire stated and that people who were around called then on phone to alert them. By the time they got to the market, they were shocked to discover that their entire wares had been gutted by fire. They wondered the cause of the fire which was said to have started around 10.30pm as according to them, they put off electrical appliances in their shops before going home on that day. Speaking also, the chairman of the market, Chief John Ebo said he was at his home and received a distress call from the security man around 11.20pm who informed him of electric spark in one of the shops in the market and that before he could get up, another call equally came that the whole market was on fire. Chief Ebo disclosed that before he could get to the market with other people, the whole place had been gutted by fire as they were only able to rescue two shops. According to the chairman, he had earlier warned the people not to leave any electric appliances on after closing for each day’s business but regretted that only few people kept to the instruction. He therefore called on the state government to come to their aid in rebuilding the market as those affected have been rendered hopeless while also soliciting for assistance to the affected victims. Sympathizing with the victims of the fire incident, the member for Ehime Mbano State Constituency Hon. Kingsley Dimaku who shed tears on seeing the level of damage done by the inferno revealed that around 3:00 am on Tuesday 15th July 2014, the chairman of the market called him on phone to tell him that the market had been razed down by fire and that nothing was saved as they could not put out the fire adding that as soon as he dropped the call, he hurriedly dressed to visit the scene and to commiserate with his people who have been thrown into agony due to the unfortunate. Hon Dimaku said the shop owners and tenants need an rescue as a matter of urgency and therefore called on the rescue governor of the state, Owelle Rochas Okorocha to come to their aid. Dimaku was seriously touched by the case of one Mrs Chiamaka Nnadozie, a student of Imo Poly whose mother he helped to bury recently and whose father is also seriously ill noting that she started a petty business to enable her finance her education to help the younger ones but regretted that she has lost everything to the fire incident. Hon Dimaku also promised to assist in his own way to ensure those people were saved from the trauma while assuring that he would discuss with the Transition Committee chairman of Ehime Mbano LGA on the reconstruction of the market. He therefore tasked the market chairman to bring the inventory of the burnt shops to him.
