First Away Trip of 2015! Were going to the Brecon Beacons in the South of Wales, where well be tackling hills, waterfalls and if youre into that kind of thing, sheep. Its always one of the best trips of the year and well be staying in a warm and roomy bunkhouse in Talgarth. Here are the essentials: When? Leaving – Friday 30th January (6 PM sharp from the Highfield Interchange) Returning – Sunday 1st February (late evening) How much? £45 for members £65 for non-members (the extra £20 membership covers your insurance and will entitle you to get money back on your day trip train tickets) What’s included in the price? • Transportation • Accommodation • Food from Saturday breakfast to Sunday lunch • Some great walking with spectacular views guaranteed • A fantastic weekend away with your favourite Southampton Hillwalkers! How to sign up: Signup will be via our online system - for those of you who are unfamiliar; go to the web form at walking.susu.org/signup/ and select Brecon Beacons Away Trip from the drop down menu. The form will go live at 7 AM on Tuesday morning (the 13th January) so don’t forget to set an alarm! This is normally one of our most popular trips, so dont hit that snooze button more than twice. Three times tops. How to pay: • Come to the Wednesday drop in meeting (at the Stags head at 1 PM on the 21st January - look for blue hoodies) • Leave a cheque (no cash please) in the SUHC pigeon hole (located in the union building above the Stags, ask at reception if you are unsure how to find it). Please put it in an envelope saying who you are and what it’s for, also don’t forget your student ID number if you need to become a member! • Alternatively pay one of us, or your friendly club treasurer Owen, in person at a daywalk or social Please note that spaces are allocated on a first come first served basis, but will only be confirmed once you’ve paid. If you can no longer come, please let us know as soon as you can so that we can reallocate your place. What to pack: • A sleeping bag • Walking boots - if you dont bring these, your choice of walk will be heavily restricted (youll be staying in the touristy bits or worse still at the bunkhouse - trainers are no longer sufficient!) • A couple of warm fleecy layers - wind chill is more significant than you think, lots of thinner layers are better than one thick one • Hats, gloves, scarves • Waterproof jacket and trousers • Decent loose fitting trousers - NOT JEANS! The quicker they dry the better • Water bottle (minimum 1 litre) - you will need to drink more fluid than on a day walk! • Wash kit, towel and spare clothes • Rucksack (around 20 litres) • Small torch (always comes in handy) • Packed food or money for dinner at the motorway services on Friday • Money for dinner on Sunday on the way home, and for drinks in the pub This is a winter trip, which means sub zero temperatures, with wind chill we might be looking at -10C (14F) (bloody cold). Bring lots of warm clothes. We are going to be strict with checking people have the right kit for this trip as ill-prepared can quickly turn to just plain ill if the weather turns nasty. If you have any questions about kit requirements, contact a member of committee. Slightly more detailed information can be found in the away trips section of the club website at walking.susu.org/awaytrips.php If youve got any questions, please feel free to give us a shout!
