First Presidential elections held in Ghana was on the 27th of April, 1960. It was held alongside a referendum centered around the countrys status from a constitutional monarchy with Elizabeth II as head of state to a republic with a presidential system of government. The winner of the election would become the countrys first President if the referendum was passed which did pass. Osagyefo Dr.Kwame Nkrumah of the Covention Peoples Party and J.B Danquah of the United Party were the only candidates in the elections. Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah won the elections with 1,016,076 of the Total 1,140,699 votes cast representing 89.07% of the vote with J.B Danquah trailing with 124,623 votes representing 10.93% of the vote cast. Four years later on the 31st of January, 1964, there was a constitutional referendum with a proposed ammendment of the constitution to turn Ghana into a one party state. There was a total of 2,776,372 vote cast with 2,773,920 ( 99.91 %) voting in favour of the proposed referendum and 2,452 (0.09% ) voting against it. This referendum was tagged by the opposition and anti-Nkrumahist as rigged. But any objective person taking into consideration the kind of development the country saw after the elections wont be doubting the outcome of this results. Why ? Because if you compare the number of votes Nkrumah gathered in the 1960 elections afforementioned and the number of votes in favour of the constitutional referendum ( 1,008,740 ( 88.47%) - For 131,425 ( 11.53%) - Against ) whilst taking into consideration the improved standard of living under his Presidency (1960 - 1964) , itll make sense the outcome of the one party state referendum. If the elections were not rigged and the constitutional referendum not rigged taking into consideration the figures involved why should the one party state referendum be tagged as rigged ? Nkrumah as President under a one party state from 1964 was the least reason for his overthrow in 1966. We all know why he was overthrown, we all know the traitors who misled cocoa farmers about cocoa pricing to cause agitations as prelude and preparation of the minds of the people for the 1966 coup. We all know those who were throwing bombs around, we all know those were taking orders from the CIA and we all know what happened to Kotoka; one of the masterminds of the coup. I bet he wish he never did the coup when the very people he worked for and with dragged his body around the streets of Accra before putting a bullet in his head. Someone tell Mr. Sydney Casely-Hayford and all other Anti-Nkrumahists that, if their political fore fathers could not destory Nkrumahs name and legacies by trying unsuccesfully to kill him, outlawing his name and images and burning of his books, this latter day efforts wont.
