First Ryan Adams new one, now this! A lineup of progressive rock heavy-hitters including guitarist Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, Kansas, Deep Purple), keyboardist/vocalist Neal Morse (no relation- Spocks Beard, Transatlantic), uberdrummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold), bassist Dave LaRue (Dixie Dregs, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani) team up with Austin-based alt-rock vocalist/guitarist Casey McPherson (Alpha Rev) to produce their second offering as a side-project called Flying Colors. WOW! At some point I really hope this turns into a main project, so these guys put out more stuff like this and actually tour more than a handful of dates in support of it! On this cut alone youve an introductory organ riff reminiscent of late 70s Kansas, drumming that harkens back to mid-80s Rush, guitar work (and keyboard interplay) that calls to mind some of Yes best work, all without the pointless 30 minutes of noodling that can drag progressive rock down into tedious muck. All of it a wonderfully driving arrangement, three different guys handling lead vocals during the track and Beach Boys-like vocal harmonies in the mix. Heres a taste. If you like the pop-meets progressive rock of A Place in Your World, give all of Flying Colors new album Second Nature a listen!
