First Truck In Greenspond by Malcolm Granter As I came from - TopicsExpress

First Truck In Greenspond by Malcolm Granter As I came from fishing this morning. Of course, I was bound for my stage, With five hundred pounds of choice cod fish, That I jigged on The Wall and the Ledge. I heard a strange noise down the harbour Like a bawl or a quack of a duck. When to my surprise, I saw with my eyes: ‘Twas Downer driving the truck. Our Town Council, they needed a driver And knowing the wages were small They wondered who they’d get to drive her From August ‘till late in the fall. Now someone did speak of Ben Downer I am sure it’s a streak of good luck No better in town could ever be found When he started a ‘driving the truck. The dogs they’re all barking, the cats are meowing. The hens are all saying “Cluck, cluck”. When way down the street, we heard the “Beep, beep.” ‘Twas Downer driving the truck. We’ll say “Hello” to friend Downer. And smile as he passes along. I know by the way he is driving, He’s bound for the head of Greenspond. Maybe he’s got goods for Fred Stratton. No doubt, that will be his first stop. With a package or two for the public And the rest for the west-end Co-op. So we’ll all say hello to Ben Downer No doubt he’ll be with us once more And we’ll fill up our glasses at Christmas And sing about Long Island Shore.
