First and foremost we need to understand the essence of what a church is. The church is the body of Christ. It is, at its core, people who belong to Christ. Past, Present, and future. The Pastors duty is to the sheep Christ has put him in charge of. God will not ask how many people did you get to confess me as lord, for every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess(Php 2:10, Rom 14:11). Instead, the Pastor will most likely be asked, why did you not preach my word faithfully?(2 Tim 4:1-5). The church itself, no matter location or denomination has a mission, to proclaim the good news. It has a duty to worship God as God. Uncompromisingly. These lines cannot be skewed. These statements by Furtick are not statements meant to mean grow up, these are statements meant to dismiss the calling of a Pastor by Christ(John 21:17, 1 Tim 4) in favor of kingdom multiplication ( John 6). Jesus did not cut corners. He did not dismiss the harder teachings. These were not ignored for fear of offending someone that they may leave. He taught his word as it is. So should be the desire of every Christian, not to be mean or rude, but instead to let Gods word be his word. Telling people if they confess Christ they can have a mansion, all your worries will go away, is not the Gospel. Telling people if they just confess Christ, it will be prosperity and health for them is not the gospel. Teaching people, in Jesus name is some magic word that allows us to impose our will onto Gods is not the gospel. Teaching people they arent being blessed because they dont tithe enough is not the Gospel. Teaching people, they are sinners and Jesus died for them and why, is the Gospel. Instructing people in their behavior inside of this established paradigm is the gospel. Glossing over sin, and focusing on things you can do to be a better you, is not the gospel. There can be no better you, until you know the gospel. 1 Cor 15 for starters.
