First day of Access to Theater. What an amazing day! •When finding out our funding was low, I needed to be super creative and find cheap art supplies. I came up with the idea of using The Box for our main theme. Boxes are free and can have many, many meanings, can be decorated etc etc. •The youth that we serve get put into all kinds of boxes. You are disabled, you cant do that etc etc. The metaphors are great and the visuals are so fun. •Mo - Maureen Finnerty, did a bag up job with carrying the box theme into her movement excersizes. She had kids who talked about being judged stupid, and wrong etc and just wanting to be loved and excepted for who they are. This happened by just drawing a square on the floor and asking them what was in their box, what was outside their box and how did others view their box. Crazy simple and great activity. •My activity was to have them make and decorate a box that showed who they are on the outside, as well as on the inside. Once again, the metaphores were profound as well as the artwork. •Music and theater with Dell E. Fisher, Deep Chinappa and Dev Luthra was amazing as well. What a talented group of people! •It is so sad to me that people judge the so called disabled as being less than, when to me, they are more than. In spite of having to work through difficulties (which in life we all have and these kids have so many more difficult situations because of predjudice) they create the most amazing work and I learn a lot from them. •Life is so much better than good with people like this in my life. I am so humbly grateful!
