First direct train to Ludhiana on track CHANDIGARH: The Northern Railway has proposed to start a regular passenger train between Chandigarh and Ludhiana in an attempt to decongest the almost 100-km stretch of road choked with vehicles. The daily train would depart from Ludhiana at 9 am and reach Chandigarh at 12.10 pm. It would leave the city at 1 pm and reach Ludhiana at 3 pm. The fare was likely to be Rs 25 for one-way. A holiday special is already running between the two stations since the first week of September as a precursor to the passenger train that was proposed in the rail budget for the year 2015-16. R K Datta, Chandigarh railway station superintendent, confirmed the passenger train would run soon. Generally, such trains are put on trial before the proposal is concretized, he added. Senior divisional commercial manager Praveen G Dwivedi said the passenger train was proposed following the demand of passengers and other inputs. Such proposals are only made after we receive demands from the field. Secondly, the holiday special too has evoked a good response, Dwivedi said, adding that these factors led them to propose two trains. The other being a passenger train on the Ambala-Saharanpur route. For Ludhiana, city residents have two options at the moment. Both Chandigarh-Amritsar Intercity Express and Chandigarh Amritsar Duronto Express, have a halt in the industrial city in Punjab. The Chandigarh-Ludhiana rail link project was hanging fire for last 11 years. The first train on the route was flagged off in August, 2013 The railway line from Chandigarh to New Morinda was opened for traffic in September, 2006 and the track between Sahnewal and Ludhiana was completed in November, 2012, while 52-km track between New Morinda and Sahnewal was completed in August, 2013. Since then, residents of both Chandigarh and Ludhiana had been seeking more trains especially passenger trains.
