First inhabitants of the Lesser Antilles: Island Arawaks and Kalinagos (Caribs) ⌂These beautiful paintings were made by British artist Penny Slinger between 1988 and 1992 on the island of Anguilla, West Indies, were she and her husband, who is an archaeologist, live. Island Arawaks (Tainos) and Kalinagos were very similar. They spoke different languages and the best way to differentiate them was by the length of their hair. Taino men wore short hair, while Kalinago men wore long hair. Both peoples migrated to the islands from the Orinoco area, in present-day Venezuela. They brought over South American dogs, fruits and vegetables.
