First lady Michelle Obama campaigned for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke in Milwaukee. Obama appeared at the Wisconsin Center in downtown Milwaukee for a rally. Im so proud to be here for Mary Burke. Shes going to be the next governor of the great state of Wisconsin, Obama said. She also recalled the challenges President Barack Obama faced when he took office. The crowd cheered as Michelle Obama talked about restoring the economy and overhauling the health care system. She is smart. She is in this for the right reasons. She cares about people. She doesnt care about politics, Obama said of Burke, who has no kids and worked with the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County. She has been such a passionate champion for our kids and families here in Wisconsin. U.S. Sen. Gwen Moore also spoke at the rally. Burke faces incumbent Gov. Scott Walker in the Nov. 4 general election. A recent Marquette University Law School poll showed the two in a dead heat with 46 percent of the vote each. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, campaigning for Walker Monday, told Wisconsin Republicans they need to step up to keep Walker as governor because national Democrats want to make an example of him and scare conservatives from trying bold things. Christie touted Walkers integrity and honesty, comparing it to Burkes recent accusations of plagiarism. What you need the most in that job is someone who is honest and who has integrity and knows (what) the right thing to do is and has the strength to do it and to stand up and do the hard things that need to be done sometimes in politics, Christie said. The chairman of the Republican Governors Association swooped into western Wisconsin Monday to help shore up a potential 2016 presidential rival to Walker. They downplayed that possible GOP showdown.
