First, let me just say that Connie is okay. It started with the hail... It hailed so hard tonight I couldnt see the neighbors house. It wiped out our satellite reception. It sounded like rocks falling on the roof. Or a herd of dachshunds. A girl in La Pine I dont know said on Facebook it was her fault; she was just wishing really hard that it would rain. Anyway... Our friend Lori who lives not far away started digging trenches around her house to keep from getting flooded. About 9:30 I get a text from Connie that shes on her way home from work, and Im glad the rain and hail and lightning had already stopped. Im undressed and cozy at home. Then just a few minutes later my phone rings, and its Connie. Im in a ditch. I get dressed, I throw some gear in the car, and I head towards her work to find her. She wasnt sure where she was. Theres hail gathered along the side of the road, and the closer I get, the more hail I see. Mist is rising from the hail like wraiths weaving across the road in a creepy slow ballet. I keep going and the wraiths are no longer drifting across the road, theyve banded together into a thick fog bank that makes it hard to see, and I have to slow down. Just as I reach the road that shes stranded on, I see a car like hers turn the corner toward home, but from the wrong direction. It must have been a similar car. I head slowly towards her work, trying to spot her, and Im not seeing her. Then the phone rings again. Three different cars had stopped to see if she was alright. One of them parked and flashed his blinkers so nobody would hit her, and two guys pushed one end and two guys pulled the other end and they got her out of the ditch. It WAS her car Id seen on its way home. Turns out with all the fog she had gone past the proper road and turned someplace that took her into a ditch, and the hail on the ground kept her from backing back out. Were home now, and her car is okay, and she is okay, and we are both so grateful we live someplace where we all help each other. Crazy night.
