First let me say that if you are eating poorly getting that under - TopicsExpress

First let me say that if you are eating poorly getting that under control and moving towards a more healthful approach to eating and moving is a great thing. That said you have to be very careful who you align with in that journey because diets that suggest 100% adherence CAN often look like what has the potential to become an eating disorder. ON MANY LEVELS. If your diet makes you start back at 0 if you “cheat” making vague references to scientific reasons I call BS. In fact most of the research suggests the exact opposite that you should be more forgiving of yourself and just move on. Once again eating whole foods is a good thing and probably should represent the majority of how you eat but the next time someone invites you to their “30 day” “no cheats allowed” you should ask yourself if the risks are worth it mentally. As an aside you should really also look at how well those diets fit for what you do because it’s extremely difficult to exercise with any intensity it’s almost always not a good fit to eat drastically low calories for long periods of time. Not only does it compromise your energy levels but it compromises your lean mass (muscle). If you are a gym owner any association with companies that support these types of behaviors is a very slippery slope that can be very harmful to your members. Check out this list and tell me if you hear these things: Do you wish that occasionally you could just eat and not worry about food quality? Do you ever wish you could spend less time on food and more time living and loving? Does it seem beyond your ability to eat a meal prepared with love by someone else – one single meal – and not try to control what is served? Are you constantly looking for ways foods are unhealthy for you? Do love, joy, play and creativity take a back seat to following the perfect diet? Do you feel guilt or self-loathing when you stray from your diet? Do you feel in control when you stick to the “correct” diet? Have you put yourself on a nutritional pedestal and wonder how others can possibly eat the foods they eat? Source: NEDA (national eating disorders.org, orthorexia nervosa)
